A guide to Dealing with 4 Month Sleep Regression.

Sleep regression happens when a toddler who has been sleeping well suddenly changes the sleeping pattern. Sleep regression will see the toddler take longer times to fall asleep, and when he or she does, the nap does not last long, thus interfering with the 6 month old baby schedule. Sleep regression mostly occur when the bay is around 3 or 4 months, and might still re-occur at 9 months, or when the baby hits a year and a half old. Let discuss some of the reasons why sleep regression occurs at 4 months, otherwise known as 4 month old sleep regression and ways of trying to alleviate the regression.

At 4 to 6 month old, the toddler has started to notice things and people around her. The baby may get fascinated and in the mood for plays and laughs during the day, taking most of his nap time. This pushes the napping schedule further to maybe late hours.

The a caregiver should engage the toddler with plays at the convenient time that will not affect the sleeping schedule. Try having baths at the evening before sleep time, since the toddler has been active during the day and might be tired.

If the feeding schedule has been altered, sleep regression will also occur. If the toddler feeds earlier than he or she is used to, the baby might wake up at night, possibly due to hunger. Avoid frequent altering of the feeding timetable, but if the change is inevitable, the baby will adapt with time.

Another cause is change of diet. A 6 months old toddler has not been introduced to several types of foods. A 4 to 6 months old toddler feeds on formula or breast milk. Any change to the above will interfere with the 6 months old sleeping schedule. To avoid this problem, any change of diet can be done early morning so that the caregiver can have enough time during the day to monitor any subsequent changes to baby behavior.

When a baby get affected by change of weather from travelling, sleeping habit will also be affected. The weather change makes the toddler not to sleep well at night, and hardly naps during the day. Sleep regression can also be caused by conditions resulting from change of weather such as a cold or flu. If possible, try not to travel with the toddler especially in cold weather so as to minimize the occurrence of sleep regression. Keep the baby warm and carry with you the right clothing for the current weather.

Come up with a routine to be followed during sleep time. Start with an early meal, then a warm bath, followed by a time to read the baby a story before the toddler sleep.

Focus on the several ways of alleviating the 4 month sleep regression,, as well as what causes it. Note that not all methods will work for your toddler simply because they worked on a friend’s baby.
